Gift Guide | Mark’s for Men

The first snow of the season has finally come and I don’t know about you but I’m looking to layer in order to keep warm. Mark’s has great gifts for every Canadian including jeans, dress shirts, sweaters, and outerwear that when compiled into one outfit, makes for a cozy and comfortable look. Did you know Mark’s is the #1 retailer of jeans in Canada with brands like Levi’s, Silver, and Buffalo? It’s a terrific place for getting your men suited up in the Canadian tuxedo this holiday season. Below are some of my favourite Mark’s for Men looks; all of which make for great gift ideas.

This weekend we visited the UBC Botanical Garden for the first time. I cannot believe that it took us nine years to get to this magical place! It is so family-friendly. The boys loved hiking the garden paths, walking through the tree tops of the Greenheart TreeWalk, exploring the gigantic tunnel and performing shows in the Roseline Sturdy Amphitheatre.

On New Year’s Day we headed to the snow play areas on Cypress Mountain. Realistically it might be the boys’ only chance to play in snow this season. We haven’t had a good snow fall in the city since Levi was in the womb and then the snow buried us. The older boys loved it but Ezra was pretty offended that we plunked him down on cold, white stuff.

On our staycation Ben and I had one day trip that we wanted to repeat from two summers ago: The kayak and hike up to Widgeon Falls. We had the perfect crisp and sunny Autumn day for the journey.

Yesterday morning I was supposed to stay home and work but then Ben showed me photos of the new playground they were going to explore in Richmond. As if I was going to let them go without me!

The Terra Nova Adventure Play Environment is on the cutting edge of playground design in that it hopes to address “Nature-Deficit Disorder’ in kids and adults by creating a play environment amongst trees and former farm fields, with wild-life nearby and adjacent to the Fraser River.

On Monday I climbed Golden Ears Mountain with my sister-in-law, Elizabeth Gadd, and her friend Shane Black. In the matter of two weeks we planned a hike that is rated “difficult” (as opposed to moderate or easy).

I thought I’d share a full picture of our corner of the yard because it looks so beautiful in full bloom. The little dirt patch is where I planted beets for the Fall. Beets and swiss chard are from the same family and will even cross pollinate.Thank-you Google ; )

I started writing this post a few weeks ago. It’s now become a two part story of my gardening adventures in 2015…

Growing an urban vegetable garden has become a huge source of joy and peaceful reflection for me. I planted my first vegetable garden 5 years ago with the oversight of my elderly Greek neighbour who grunted green advice to me.

If you’re ever on Granville Island with your family or visiting from out of town it’s easy to miss some of the special, more secluded spots. Last weekend we rode our bikes with the three boys in tow and headed to Ron Basford Park which is located on the easterly tip of the island.
